Blog Tour: Tell Me a Secret by Holly Cupala (& Author Spilling Secrets Video!)

Today is my stop for the official Tell Me a Secret blog tour!

Title: Tell Me a Secret
Author: Holly Cupala
Pages: 304
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: June 22, 2010
Source: Publicist
Tell me a secret, and I'll tell you one...

In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda’s death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams—a best friend to unlock her sister’s world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all—Miranda has a secret all her own.

Then two lines on a pregnancy test confirm her worst fears. Stripped of her former life, Miranda must make a choice with tremendous consequences and finally face her sister’s demons and her own.

In this powerful debut novel, stunning new talent Holly Cupala illuminates the dark struggle of a girl who must let go of her past to find a way into her future.
Holly Cupala's debut novel, Tell Me A Secret is a refreshing and eye-opening take on teen pregnancy and its consequences. Built on lies and secrets, Cupala crafts an intense story about a girl and her baby with nobody to trust. Tell Me A Secret is not for the lighthearted. It's all-consuming and Rand's story demands any reader's attention. I was immediately pulled into Rand's mindset and was completely amazed at Cupala's gritty, honest prose.

Rand is a person who goes through so much personal growth. At the beginning, I found her infantile and rather naive, but as she comes to terms with her situation, I found her to be an inspiring character. I thought that Xanda was a well-developed character through different flashbacks and memories. She played a large part in Rand's life and held many secrets. In Rand's life, I felt suffocated and trapped by all of the secrets and lies that surrounded her. In Tell Me A Secret, you don't empathize with the character, you ARE the character.

Tell Me A Secret is the most devouring debut novel that I've read. Cupala provides us with real, genuine characters, many brutal truths, and a harsh, but nonetheless beautiful story of a girl, trying to make the best of her situation.

Holly Cupala wrote teen romance novels before she ever actually experienced teen romance. When she did, it became all about tragic poetry and slightly less tragic novels. When she isn't writing and contributing to readergirlz, she spends time with her husband and daughter in Seattle, Washington. These days, her writing is less about tragedy and more about hope. TELL ME A SECRET is her first novel. Ten percent of the author's proceeds go toward World Vision's Hope for Sexually Exploited Girls.

How long did it take for you to write Tell Me a Secret?
From idea to sale, it took about four years – which seems like a really long time! But I wasn’t writing full time. At first, I only wrote a few pages at a time while trying to find the story, then we had a baby daughter and I pretty much didn’t work on it for about ten months. Then I hired a sitter for one day a week and went to the library to work! When I received a Work-In-Progress Grant from SCBWI and Judy Blume, I added a second day. Then I signed with my wonderful agent and worked on a final revision for a few months, and he sold it in just a couple of weeks to our top choice, my dream editor!

How did the cover of Tell Me a Secret come to be? Did you have any input on it?
I’ll tell you a secret: we didn’t have a title or a cover until the last possible minute! My working title was Brimstone Soup (which made sense if you read it but sounded paranormal), then sold it as A Light That Never Goes Out (a reference to a Smiths song), but it wasn’t quite right. We went through literally hundreds of ideas, and the design department at Harper was patiently waiting for us to decide before they could get to work on the cover.

The night before we had to have a title to put in the official catalogue, I was falling asleep and remembered the conversation that takes place between Miranda and her sister in the very first chapter. “Wanna know a secret?” “Tell me, and I’ll tell you one.” Tell Me a Secret! I sat up in bed at 2 a.m. and shook my husband. “Honey! Tell Me a Secret!” They loved it, and within a couple of days the design department sent back the first version of this cover, and we all fell in love! All I had to do with it was coming up with the right title. :-)

Any secrets your willing to share with us?
There are lots of little personal secrets that found their way into TMAS. Like funny phrases my husband uses: watch, and learn. (Xanda says this.) Or my daughter’s favorite stuffed animal, ‘Raffe, who makes an appearance. Or music from our friends’ bands (we used lyrics from a Splashdown song with permission, and Milo wears a Freezepop t-shirt in one scene). CafĂ© Shiraz is named after my husband! The funny thing is when my 15 year old niece came to visit last year, I gave her the almost-finished manuscript to read. She glued herself to the couch and read it in one sitting, and as she was reading, she thought, “Oh, that’s exactly what Aunt Holly calls my cousin,” and other things like that. As she was reading, she forgot it was me who wrote the book! Which, I thought, was pretty cool!

Thank you so much, Mavie, for inviting me to The Bookologist and for being a part of the TMAS tour!

I'm the last stop for the TMAS tour, so, sadly, there won't be a stop tomorrow, or the day after that, or the day after the day after tomorrow (did that make any sense?).. well.. you get the point.

BUT, Holly is the featured author at readergirlz for the entire month of August, so there's still plenty of time to learn more about her and TELL ME A SECRET. Be sure to stop by!

Blog Makeover - New Look

Thursday, July 29, 2010 | | 13 comments
As you guys can see, I got a blog makeover! I am 100% happy with it... It's been the perfect blog design I've been looking for in a long time.. It's very simple but yet, elegant. The background is also perfect, it's light blue! I would like to give a huge thank you to:

She's blog designer extraordinare!

Blogger Blooms (1)

'Blogger Blooms' is a highlight of some young adult book blogs that I've recently just discovered. These blogs don't exactly have to be new, they could be old as well. Three to four blogs will be featured for every post and I give a brief description on their blog. :)

Melina of Reading Vacation is a blog that I discovered a few days ago. She's only 11 years old and yet, already blogs! How cool is that! She reviews middle grade/tween and young adult books on her blog. Her most recent review is Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr and gave it five stars. She also has a twitter!

Harmony of Harmony's Radiant Reads is also one of my recent blog discoveries. She started her blog this April and so far, is doing an awesome job at running it! She's a big fan of purple and black covers (The Dark Divine, as an example). Her most recent review was Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey and rated it 'awesomesauce', meaning (according to Harmony's rating) the book was dripping with awesomeness.

Emily of Emily's Reading Room is one that I discovered a couple of weeks back. She started book blogging June 2009, as a way for her to give book recommendations to the people who asked her for them. Her most recent review is This Gorgeous Game by Donna Freitas rated it 5 stars. She found the emotions packed in this novel breathtaking. She has a twitter, Facebook, and a Goodreads!

Those are all my blogger blooms! What are yours? Did you find any awesome blogs?

Bro-Jitsu: The Martial Art of Sibling Smackdown by Daniel H. Wilson

Monday, July 26, 2010 | | 2 comments

Title: Bro-Jitsu: The Martial Art of Sibling Smackdown
Author: Daniel H. Wilson
Pages: 160
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
Publication Date: April 13, 2010
Source: Publicist

Bro-jitsu is a highly stylized form of physical and mental combat that has been practiced and honed to perfection over countless millennia by billions of human beings who all have one crucial thing in common: annoying siblings. The book breaks down Bro-jitsu into three strategies: offensive moves, defensive moves, and psychological manipulation. Each section delivers step-by-step instructions on performing crucial techniques, from the classic Wet Willy to the inventive Full-Body Defensive Fish Wiggle. No sibling should be without it!
Bro-Jitsu is one of the coolest, entertaining, amusing, and most hilarious books ever! I enjoyed every page. This is perfect for those who have siblings (especially for brothers, since girls don't usually get into the physical stuff). The illustrations are also very cute and definitely help you picture the move. It contains three parts; offensive moves, defensive moves, and psychological manipulation. Each sections contains step-by-step instructions on how to do the coolest moves ever!

What I loved about this book so much are the sacred vows you have to read out loud before you start reading all those fun tricks and moves. One vow that I just HAD to laugh at was, "I will strive to physically and mentally torture my siblings to make them stronger, better people." Can I just say LOL?

Wilson teaches you an infinite number of kick-ass moves. There's the teeth snap (this guarantees your siblings' fingers will be nowhere near your french fries), delayed hair pull (just for fun), stealth butt kick, punches, shoulder pin, wrist grab, sleeve grab, and SO SO SO much more! Trust me, there are a ton more of tricks you can do to your siblings, I just mentioned the first few moves listed on the book.

Once your done reading this, I am sure you will be a bro-jitsu master. The steps and instructions are very easy to understand and follow. Read this AWESOME book, and you'll be laughing, and at the same time learning the coolest tricks ever!

A kick-ass book.

Shadow Hills by Anastasia Hopcus

Wednesday, July 21, 2010 | | 6 comments

Author: Anastasia Hopcus
Pages: 400
Publisher: Egmont
Publication Date: July 13, 2010
Source: Borrow

After her sister Athena's tragic death, it's obvious that grief-stricken Persephone "Phe" Archer no longer belongs in Los Angeles. Hoping to make sense of her sister's sudden demise and the cryptic dreams following it, Phe abandons her bubbly LA life to attend an uptight East Coast preparatory school in Shadow Hills, MA -- a school which her sister mysteriously mentioned in her last diary entry before she died.

Once there, Phe quickly realizes that something is deeply amiss in her new town. Not only does Shadow Hills' history boast an unexplained epidemic that decimated hundreds of its citizens in the 1700s, but its modern townies also seem eerily psychic, with the bizarre ability to bend metal. Even Zach -- the gorgeous stranger Phe meets and immediately begins to lust after -- seems as if he is hiding something serious. Phe is determined to get to the bottom of it. The longer she stays there, the more she suspects that her sister's untimely death and her own destiny are intricately linked to those who reside in Shadow Hills.
Shadow Hills is an extraordinary read that I found both mysterious as well as romantic. Devinish Prep and the town it resides in, Shadow Hills, Massachusetts, emanates a dark, mysterious force, lurking in the shadows. But convincingly, it also provides a great, sort of gothic setting for a deep, entrancing romance. I really loved the way both the romance and the mystery blended and created a creative storyline.

Phe, with her own insecurities and doubts, is mature and practical. She is opinionated that is determined and strong-minded. Her relationship with Zach grew naturally and gradually, as they broke down each others' barriers and let themselves fall in love. I must admire how effortless Anastasia Hopcus made it all seem. The way that Zach and Phe were able to work together was so natural and so characteristic.

Anastasia Hopcus' debut novel will definitely be distinguished amongst other YA books. It is unique, gratifying, and suspenseful. The characters, the setting, and the writing are all perfectly balanced. I can't wait for the next installment of this series! Shadow Hills is a standout and a book that many young adults will definitely love!

Author Interview: Joelle Anthony

Joelle Anthony

Books:
  • Restoring Harmony (Putnam 2010)
Links:

Bio:
Joëlle currently lives on a tiny island in British Columbia with her musician husband, Victor Anthony. As for the future, their only plan is to avoid real jobs, write and play guitar in front of the wood stove, and live happily ever after. Look for her debut novel, Restoring Harmony, in May 2010 from Putnam.
____________________________________________________________

How does it feel being a debut author?
It’s exciting but also kind of surreal. I mean, it’s really odd to think that there’s something I’ve written out there that other people can read. Until recently, I’ve had complete control over who read my writing and now it’s out there for anyone who’s interested. That’s a very strange feeling. But exciting too.

I love the cover for Restoring Harmony! Did you have anything to do with it? What do you think about it?
I did not have anything to do with it. Putnam got a wonderful artist named Hugh Syme to create the cover. I don’t think it could’ve been more perfect as far as matching the feel of the story. I am completely in love with it, and I do know how lucky I am because not everyone gets a cover they love.

How are you and Molly alike? How are you different?
Well, I would say that Molly can do a lot of things I wish I could do, so in a way she’s more what I’d like to be than actually me. I’d like to be able to sew, be strong and fit, and I really wish I could play the fiddle. My husband is a musician and we have a fiddle, and every once in a while I get it out and kind of mess around with it – years of violin lessons make me think maybe it could happen – but then I remember all the practice it takes and I decide to read instead. Molly and I are alike in that we’re both resourceful and when we set our mind on something, we can stay focused until we accomplish it (except the part where I want to play the fiddle!). We’re not alike in that she’s stubborn. I’m pretty easy going.

If you could pick a theme song for Restoring Harmony, what would it be and why?

Restoring Harmony actually has a theme song. It’s called Brianna’s Reel and it was written by the wonderful teen fiddle player Sarah Tradewell. In the book, all of the tunes I mention are real tunes except Brianna’s Reel which I made up. But thanks to Sarah, it’s now a real tune. By the time this interview posts, it should be available for readers to listen to on my website because Sarah and my husband went into the recording studio recently and recorded it.

Did you base any of your characters on real people?
I did not base any characters on anyone real and that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. If any of them remind you of anyone you know or yourself, well, it’s just a coincidence. I did steal a few of my husband’s best lines, although I’m not telling you which ones.

Do you have any must-have's while writing?

I do need it quiet. And warm is good. I have trouble concentrating if I’m cold. I also drink a lot of vanilla black tea with milk and eat a lot of snacks (but good for you things like cheese, nuts, dried fruit, pickles, and crackers).

What is the best piece of advice for young writers?
Read. Then read some more. I have said this in every interview, but I do not think I can say it enough. The thing is, so many people don’t read because they think it’s taking away from their writing time. I honestly believe that you’d be better reading for a whole year before writing anything than to cheat yourself of reading time so you can write. You can’t write unless you read too.

Lastly, is there anything else you'd like to add?
Well, I definitely want to add a big THANK YOU for having me here! It’s been great fun and I love your site. You’re doing great things for writers and readers everywhere. Also, I’d like to say that publishing takes a long time and the best thing anyone who wants to write professionally can do (besides reading!) is to have lots of other interests. Always respect your writing, but make a great life around it so it’s not the be-all and end-all. It’s a lot more fun that way too.

Thank you, Joelle for the fantastic interview! Be sure to check out the links posted above.

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Wednesday, July 14, 2010 | | 13 comments

Author: Morgan Matson
Pages: 352
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children Publishing
Publication Date: May 4, 2010
Source: Publicist
Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew--just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn't seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she's coming to terms with her father's death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road--diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards--this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.
Amy & Roger's Epic Detour is a relaxing and smooth read, perfect for a summer day. The little postcards and pictures and knickknacks on each chapter page make it a more unique, fun novel.

Although light on the outside, Amy & Roger's Epic Detour dives into aspects of friendship, grief, and loss. The whole idea of a detour really presented us with the steady growth in character for Amy and Roger. Their feelings for each other develop slowly, but their relationship is strengthened by the obstacles that they face through different phases of their journey.

Amy, still dealing with her father's death, and blaming herself for it, is unsure about the different inner battles raging within her. She tries to push away her growing feelings for Roger, but like most, she can't help it. Roger, on the other hand, is still hanging on to his romantic past, and at the same time, surprisingly finds himself falling for Amy. He is confused about his feelings for Amy and his previous ex-girlfriend.

Morgan Matson has done an amazing job with interlacing different places and different events! Both main characters are well-developed and unique. The themes that Matson presents through Amy & Roger's Epic Detour is explored thoroughly. I was really able to relate to both characters and their feelings.

Commenters, readers, followers, fellow bloggers, authors, publicists, and publishers, my blog wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for you all.

I'd just like to mention some very great people to me. I'd like to give a special thank you to.. Eleni, Katie, Lisa, Lauren, Shy, S @ Putnam, V @ Simon & Schuster, and Joelle Anthony.

Eleni has supported me and helped me ever since we got to know each other through instant chatting. She's been an awesome friend to me ever since.

Katie is also another very good friend of mine. I also got to know Katie through chat. She's also helped me all along and as well as made my layout.

Lisa, my twitter buddy. Yeah, I know I haven't gone on for a really long time but when I used to go on, we'd always tweet messages to each other. We sometimes emailed in the past too. She's given me a great amount of support, and also even cooler, we discuss about random stuff.. like Thai food for example. :) She's super fun and nice!

Shy, another twitter buddy of mine. We always used to send tweets to each other and try to help each other out. She's super kind.

Lauren was my first follower. I remember squealing when she followed me. Not only was she my first follower, but she's helped me so much, especially at the start when I needed the most help. She's a wonderful blogger.

S @ Putnam and V @ Simon and Schuster has given me many opportunities to review amazing books and as well as get in touch with super cool and awesome authors. They both are absolutely kind and friendly.

-- and lastly,

Joelle Anthony, author of Restoring Harmony. I may not be right but I think I've gotten over 150 emails from Joelle. We email each other almost everyday and we talk about the most random-est things you can think of. She's super friendly, nice, and cheerful.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I'm going to hold a mini Blogoversary/Birthday (Birthversary) bash in the next couple of days. I'm thinking about 6 giveaways. My birthday's this coming August 9 so it's the right time to hold it. Hopefully, I'll have some books and swag that I can give up and don't want anymore or either have an extra copy of. Also, you should join my $50 book gift card giveaway!
